This was the first not for profit that I ever visited that was bankrupt. I called the pastor of the church and drove out to see her the next day. She was operating one of these so called mega churches, with membership in the tens of thousands. I had seen the pastor on TV, I was sure.. I think she has a national audience. When I got to the church office she let me in and I knew immediately that she was the famous pastor I had seen and heard all over the media. She was very nice. She said that she agreed to talk because there were lessons to be learned. And this is not news to her congregation. She had made some fundamental errors, and, as she said, had strayed from what the Bible teaches. Most of it she admitted was due to her own ego, which came to putting her own needs and fame before the needs and wants of those she was shepherding. I could tell she was humbled to say this. Anyway, the church is apart from her media ministry, and she had not paid attention to its operations and several assistants had made some serious mistakes. Now the church was almost a half million in debt. The congregation had volunteered to take up a special collection to stave off creditors, and while she agreed, she also said that she would be putting her own money into the church.

Mrs. Smyth, my friend Joy’s mother, has finally agreed to go to talk with an Trust and Estates attorney who can help her revise her will and trust. That’s why she talked her into going to an attorney. She was referred to this attorney by a couple people at her job who has been happy with his work on behalf of themselves and their parents. He is going to go over all Mrs. Smyth’s assets and holdings, and fix it up in a revocable trust for her. Joy says she will be the trustee if her mom wants her to. She thinks after all is said and done, Mrs. Smyth will be able to get some equity out of her home to pay off all her debts. Mrs. Smyth is beginning to not feel so alone and adrift since Mr. Smyth passed away.

Tara couldn’t believe that Cathy had high blood sugar. I wasn’t too surprised. We do have it in the family somewhere. A great aunt or uncle. And that’s what I know of. Cathy wasn’t surprised either. She seemed to take it in stride, but she has promised that she is going to try to beat it and get off meds. I am not too familiar with diabetes, so I am not sure you can work your way off of the insulin if it’s not the type of illness that you get later in life. type 2. Cathy insists that you can. I’ll take her word for it. Meanwhile, Tara and I checked our own levels. We have a medicine cabinet with every home test you can think of. Tara was upset! Her levels were up. I asked her if she had just eaten, and what. She had just had lunch. So that was it. Tara took it later and her levels were normal. She was relieved. So was I. One person at a time with a problem, please. Cathy began a special diet, and it about 10 days I can see she has lost some weight. She said that her doctor is happy with her progress, and that she will be on the insulin for a time.

I want to have a strong focal point for my practice, but I don’t want to flood an already overflowing area of the legal system. You would think that with all of the car accidents in the state of California that there couldn’t be enough auto accident attorneys, but a quick glance through the phone book in this county alone will tell you different. It seems like every practice there is in this section of the country is, or has at least one attorney on staff who is, a specialist in lawsuits involving automobile accidents. I don’t want to be one of those guys you see chasing ambulances away from accident scenes, or roaming the halls of the hospital looking for clients who got rear ended at a stop light. I went through law school and studied hard to pass the bar to help people, not to fight over a fender bender or to try and beat the super store out of money after a slip and fall in aisle seven. The problem is, that there isn’t any money in being a good hearted lawyer that stands up for the people. Law school was expensive, I’m in a situation where I have to start making some money – I might be forced to take on less appealing but more lucrative cases until my loans are paid back, then I’ll focus my practice on something that is important to me.
